Our story

We built the tea company we wanted to buy from.

We started Purring Lotus in Hong Kong in 2025.

We built the kind of company we wished existed. One centered on a small selection of carefully chosen teas, where the design, packaging, and customer experience matter just as much as the tea itself.

Good tea doesn’t need to be a hobby. Our goal is to make choosing, brewing, and enjoying tea simple for everyone.

How it all began

While we were living in Europe, tea was a connection to family and home in Hong Kong. It was also a way to pause and relax while steeping some leaves.

Over time, we became more and more interested in tea. It eventually became a hobby that replaced specialty coffee.

In 2025 we moved back to Hong Kong to start a family. After our son was born, we wanted to build something meaningful to us while we were on parental leave.

What matters to us

We wanted to build a brand where the teas we sell are as important as the experience of discovering, unwrapping, and enjoying them.

That’s why we stick to a small curated selection of teas. We don’t ask you to choose between 19 different green teas, we just want to share our favorite one.

The world of tea can offer an intimidating amount of choices and complex instructions. There is no wrong way to enjoy tea. Expertise is optional, not required.

How we source tea

Our rule is to always be sourcing. Every day, we are either talking to growers or trying new teas.

For every tea we sell, there are hundreds we don’t. Every tea needs to earn its place.

We have a high bar for who we work with. We require food safety standards, pesticide testing, and certifications for each of our growers.

Finding the right growers.

The name

We drew inspiration from Luna, our British Shorthair, when coming up with the name Purring Lotus.

Her lifestyle boils down to sleeping all day in a sunny spot. The hardest part of her day is picking which one.

Our teas are worth the pause. Or paws, depending on your point of view.
